GRACE IS UNCONVENTIONAL

Luke 15:22‭-‬23 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:‬

Many of us are familiar with the story of the prodigal son in the scriptures. This was the fellow who couldn’t wait for his father to die to inherit his estate. He demanded for his inheritance; and not many days, he journeyed to a far country and wasted his substance on riotous living.

It became so bad that he went to work in a pig farm, something that was an abomination for Jews. When he finally came to himself, he returned to his father’s house. The conventional thing was to teach this wasted fellow a big lesson by beating the nonsense out of him. But upon his return, the father did something that was unconventional:

The father ran ahead of everyone and embraced his son. I understand that in that culture, if any one did what the prodigal son did, when he tries to return home, the town people will bring a pot and smash it before him, telling him, your life here is over; you cannot come in here. Thus before anyone could get to the boy, the father went ahead of everyone and received his son back home.

Then he asked the servants to bring the best robe and put it on him (robe of righteousness); put a ring on his finger (restored dominion); put shoes on his feet (restored place) and killed the fatted calf (restored prosperity).

It baffles me that the elder brother who has been home all this while serving his father faithfully never got anything. It was rather the fellow who wasted his father’s substance that got the celebration (the guilty one became the celebrant). This does not necessarily mean that if you go and live a riotous life you will really enjoy the grace of God. We all know that there are people living any how who never find God's grace.

The truth is that the younger son positioned himself to receive the love of his father by returning home. The older son never took advantage of his relationship with his father hence he got nothing. God’s grace has been flowing ever since the cross. If you will receive it, you will reign in this life.

The crux of the revelation of the grace of God is that, the guilty one (the one that deserves death) became the beneficiary; while the sinless Son of God became the guilty one that He might bring us to God. Hallelujah!
